GPS apps are among the most popular apps on smartphones, and TeleNav is doing something different to capitalize on that demand. They're launching a browser-based GPS navigation solution, complete with voice guidance, turn-by-turn directions, and an API for other apps to integrate with.

TeleNav announced in a press release yesterday that it has created a browser-based GPS navigation solution. It's targeted at mobile phones, and is full up on features:

That's right, it's free for both consumers and developers, the latter of which get some amazing abilities.

"This is an enormous amount of added value for any mobile, location-based website or app focused on travel, shopping, local search, deals and more," said Sal Dhanani, co-founder and vice president of products for TeleNav. "With one line of code, you can give your customers one-click access to premium, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions to any location, including hotels, restaurants, merchants or deal locations. Customers never need to leave your app."

Developers can take advantage of TeleNav's APIs using only one line of code, instantly giving users access to the above features, all without leaving the application. All in all, TeleNav seems to have raised the bar for navigation software, and as long as states don't ban smartphone use while driving there should be no problems. Others have a lot of catching up to do.

The service is expected to launch in "early 2012," and users do not need to be current TeleNav customers. All they need is a smartphone or feature phone. Developers looking to get early access to TeleNav APIs can apply online, but as the website points out, "room is limited."
