Last week, iOS hacker pod2G demoed an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 on third generation iPod touch. Since then he has confirmed that the untethered jailbreak also works on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4g and Apple TV 2G running iOS 5.0.1.
pod2G has provide another update on the progress on his blog:
Hello my friends,I know that I've been silent yesterday and that it was annoying.
Sorry for this, but I had to organize things for the release. Also, I've tested iPad 1 and it worked. Today I hope I can test a 3Gs.
BTW: please don't propose to be a beta tester because I'm too paranoid, fearing leaks.
Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole.That will take some days.
In the meanwhile, I'm starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S.I'll take you informed of my progress.
The good news is that pod2G seems to have received enough donation to buy an iPhone 4S. He has just tweeted that he has got his hands on an iPhone 4S and will be working hard over the weekend to see if the untethered jailbreak also works with iPhone 4S.
It will be interesting to see if the untethered jailbreak works with iPhone 4S, which would mean that it could also work with iPad 2, as they're both powered by Apple's A5 chip. But it is quite certain that he will release an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4g and Apple TV 2G running iOS 5.0.1 in few days.
